Tech started his career right out of college for a leading insurance firm. As a sales
representative in his hometown city of Philadelphia, he secured “Rookie of the Year” designation during his first 12 months. In his first five years at the Company, Tech managed multiple high-
priority territories and became the youngest manager of the largest office in the country, at 28 years old. In total, Tech managed 37 states over the course of 11 years, with a singular focus on the Medical Stop Loss industry for seven years. As part of this role, Tech managed over
$500mm of in-force business and was responsible for writing over $200mm of Stop Loss new business. His related responsibilities included new business sales, pricing, persistency, overall
profitability of the Southeast region, hiring top talent, retaining talent, managing 11 direct reports in 14 SE states, developing dormant territories, managing strategic partnerships, and serving as distribution leader for a variety of initiatives and projects. Tech’s commitment to every facet of his work is what enabled him to lead his team to achieve the #1 position in the country, as the largest direct writer of Stop Loss, three out of seven years, finishing second in all other years. 

Tech has immense gratitude for his opportunities and experience to date, but has always felt pulled to pursue or create something that felt more uniquely characteristic of his core values,
both in the people management and product sides of the business. This pull is what pushed Tech to create SLATE, with business partner Payton Brady.

Just as in his professional ventures, in his personal life, Tech’s focus is always on ROI. Often “time” is his key performance indicator. From backyard fires with his wife, three children and two dogs, to fishing w/friends, to vacations w/family, to something as simple as a car ride on a
beautiful morning, Tech sees every minute as an opportunity to create something meaningful and lasting. This is a philosophy he attributes to his past and upcoming success.  

Driven by a passion for the “art of deals,” Payton found his way into the insurance industry from the high-profile, fast-paced world of sports management. Quickly into his first role in insurance, Payton understood the potential to apply his way of thinking and unique skillset within the industry. Immediately, he committed to growing himself by gaining several industry-specific accreditations, including becoming a Certified Employee Benefits Specialist (CEBS) via the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School of Business and a Certified Self-Funding Specialist (CSFS) via the Health Care Administrators Association.

With more than a decade in the Employee Benefits Industry, and specific focus in Medical Stop Loss, Payton’s experience spans the broker and carrier sides of the business. In his most recent role, he managed a $60M block of business and exceeded annual new business sales goals throughout his seven-year tenure at the company. Year over year, Payton was amongst the nation’s top in terms of new business closing ratio and block persistency.

All the while, Payton fed his entrepreneurial spirit and continued to grow his technology skillset by assisting several businesses with everything from basic website support to inception through acquisition strategies. Now, Payton channels all his experience and drive into his own company – SLATE SaaS – with business partner, Michael Techtmann.

With innovation and technology always at the forefront of his mind, some might be surprised to learn that in his personal life, Payton values simple and traditional. In his spare time, Payton enjoys breaking 100 on the golf course, playing outdoors with his daughter, Parker, and traveling to new places with his better half, Erin. For Payton, it is about balancing bold thinking, operational efficiency and core values to realize success.

Born in Israel, Moe and his family immigrated to the United Sates when he was nine years old. As one of seven children, living in and around New York City, Moe saw how hard his parents had to work to provide basic necessities for his family. He understood the idea of a work ethic early on in life, so much so that he started his first business in middle school – playing the keyboard at bar/bat mitzvahs for $250 an event. The best part, Moe is a completely self-taught musician – not a minute of formal training. For Moe, music has always been more than something he does well. It has offered him an outlet for processing life and directly translated to his career path in tech. He thought of computers as his keyboard and started to explore where his talents might take him. 

In the summer of his senior year in high school, Moe landed an unpaid internship at a real estate company. He was pushing paperwork and making coffee when the head of IT, who took a liking to him, requested his time to train him as IT support. Almost overnight, Moe learned everything and more about the job. This quest for knowledge, coupled with the mentorship from his boss, was the beginning of Moe’s formal training in tech.  As a jumping off point, he sought out and secured a Microsoft Engineer certification and well, the rest is history. Moe ended up taking over as the IT lead at that same company where he interned. For a while, IT was fulfilling, but he saw the cap and knew he needed to evolve his career in technology to keep with the pace of it and truly reach his full potential.
  

This is when Moe’s entrepreneurial mindset kicked into high gear. He knew he could provide quality IT support via a company of his own, while growing his tech mind and making a bigger impact for other business models. This is how Moe bridged the gap between IT and what he is known for now – software development. Since identifying this focus, Moe has created, led and contributed to multiple companies, successfully servicing thousands of clients. What has always remained constant for Moe is his passion for developing digital solutions. His philosophy: “You can’t confidently call a software a solution unless it’s secure, scalable, and reliable.” Moe is leading technology at SLATE from this point of view always. When Moe is not hard at work developing game-changing software solutions, he is changing the game on the home front – being totally present with his wife, three boys and little girl. He helps with the morning routine, and supper time in the Levine household is absolutely sacred – no work, no phones! Moe considers his wife one of his biggest inspirations. He’ll tell you that it’s their partnership that generates their success.

Following college, Kate got on the corporate ladder right away in pursuit of “career.” Strong college internships pushed her into the world of communications/public relations. For 15 years, Kate worked as part of top-ranked communications firms, leading strategy and tactical execution for portfolio pieces of business on behalf of healthcare companies large and small. This looked like, taking a biotech from drug inception to clinical trials, data reads outs, awareness efforts, got-to-market strategies and launch; to fully integrated multi-channel celebrity programs that you see on the likes of the Today Show and GMA. Kate has seen companies through acquisitions, integrating teams, putting processes in place, and setting communications strategies internally and externally.

Hanging onto the ladder, Kate climbed, reaching the coveted title of EVP at the age of 34. It was thrilling, but soon after, everything looked different from her vantage point. While it felt like a startling and unexpected shift her mind made at the time, reflecting, her idea of “career” had been challenged since she made the decision to take the practical path all those years ago. Couple that with an unrecognizable Corporate America post-pandemic, with executives doubling down on old ways and unable to evolve their leadership approach and tactics to meet the needs of people and business today – Kate knew she had to hit pause. The goal? Think outside of the box!

Enter SLATE – and the opportunity to apply relevant business development experience to a start-up, offer fresh perspective and drive innovation within the Medical Stop Loss insurance industry and do it all as part of a leadership team that acknowledges there are many ways to achieve your bottom line.

Whether with family, friends, colleagues or strangers, Kate is unapologetically herself. As with her work, Kate sees every personal encounter as an opportunity for a positive, lasting experience. She spends her time “offline” making the most of the moment she’s in – dinner with her husband, swim with her daughter, fetch with her dog – and so much more.

As he grew up, Jacob was excited by the idea of being in business as well, with a focus on technology. His interest in data grew as Jacob discovered how much he enjoys finding answers that are not readily available on the surface. All of this led Jacob to pursue and complete a degree in Business Analytics from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and what ultimately led him to SLATE.

Things that set Jacob apart include his:

Confidence – in his ability to find answers. He may not know the answer to a question the first time it is asked, but you will not catch him not knowing that answer again. He will learn what he needs to stay ahead of the curve.

Commitment – to being a reliable team member who shows up for whatever is needed and to delivering on those items and more

When Jacob is “offline,” you’ll find him keeping a low-key schedule, hanging out with his cat Dito, and exploring his new city of residence – Nashville.

As part of that first job, Effy worked with several different kinds of technologies and applications
to service customers. Layer on Effy’s father’s experience and role as a software engineer and
his professional interests/paths were solidified. He became a student of both understanding technology and learning how to develop it, leading him to our team at SLATE.
